Cyclists Laura Trott and Jason Kenny, who plan to marry in September, won historic cycling gold medals in Rio. Britain enjoys its most successful overseas Olympic event with 50 medals.

Trott became the most successful female Olympian with now four gold medals under her belt. Her fiancé Kenny meanwhile matched Chris Hoy’s record of six gold medals after winning the keirin.

Giles Scott won gold in sailing, and there were silver medals for diver Jack Laugher and cyclist Becky James. Bronze medals were won in cycling, boxing and two in gymnastics.

The nine medals won by Team GB on day 11 is the highest number achieved in a day in Rio, so far Britain has won 2 more medals than the total in London 2012. The previous Olympics remain Britain’s most successful games.

24-year-old Trott was in tears as Kenny raced to victory, the couple then embraced and kissed to a jubilant crowd. Kenny said, “Today just felt like a dream. I’m just kind of so tired I’m just floating through it.”

Trott meanwhile said, “I can’t believe it – I did not expect that at all. I am just so happy that it all came together.” The Olympian then happily tweeted “Arghhhh!!!!!! I love him to bits @JasonKenny107 !! Our kids have to get some of these genes right?!”

Team GB’s Rio 2016 chef de mission Mark England stated that what the team brought to Rio is an “incredible achievement” and that the country should be proud.
