Brian White, who faced deportation, has been told by the Home Office that he can stay in the UK indefinitely.

21-year-old Mr White moved to the UK from Botswana at age 15 and lives with his adoptive British family in Wolverhampton.

An initial application at age 18 for him to stay in the UK, after he was offered a place at Oxford University, was rejected.

A petition, started by the student’s friend Luke Wilcox, to get the Home Office to offer Brian a permanent stay in this country gathered almost 112,000 signatures.

“We have been in contact with Mr White’s legal representatives today (4 September) to confirm that his application for Indefinite Leave to Remain has been approved,” said a Home Office spokesperson.

“Brilliant” White, who said he was “delighted” and is now looking to obtain student finance, will now be able to study chemistry at the University.
