Reports name Alum Rock couple as Gul and Begum Wazir

A COUPLE from Birmingham have been murdered in Pakistan.

Reports have named the pair as Gul and Begum Wazir, from Alum Rock.

Mr Wazir, a taxi driver, and his wife were reportedly shot after a planned marriage between their daughter and another man fell through.

The couple’s son, who was with his parents in Pakistan, was not injured in the attack and has returned to the UK.

West Midlands Police said in a statement they were supporting authorities in Pakistan with the investigation.

Mohammad Siddique, Mr Wazir’s former boss, told the BBC the couple’s funeral has already taken place in Pakistan.

He said the killing had devastated his family here in the UK.

“Gul Wazir came to see me last Saturday and said he was going to Pakistan the following day to sort out some family problems,” Mr Siddique said.

“He was a very good worker and such a nice man. He was like my older brother.”

He described the family as “devastated”, adding: “When I went to see them they were so shocked and in tears.”

West Midlands Police said in a statement: “The murder enquiry is being carried out by authorities in Pakistan and we will support and fully engage with their investigation as required. We are working to support the family of the deceased.”
