Andy Street, the managing director of John Lewis, is confirmed to be “interested in running” for the office of Mayor of the West Midlands.

Street, Birmingham born, currently chairs a body that handles economic growth in the West Midlands and has been in charge of the department store for almost ten years after having graduated from Oxford University.

Under Street, there has been a 67% increase in sales, raking in £3.7bn in 2015.

Should Street go ahead with his plans, he would apply to be the Conservative mayoral candidate. A spokesperson for John Lewis said:

“Should Andy be successful in his application, he has agreed with the chairman that he should step down from his role and a further announcement will be made to confirm the succession plan for the future leadership of the John Lewis brand.”

The candidate for West Midlands Mayor is Sion Simon, MEP for the West Midlands and former MP.
