Second Diana recognition for Sandwell’s Shadow Youth Cabinet
YOUNG role models in Sandwell have won a prestigious Princess Diana Award of Excellence.
The borough’s Shadow Youth Cabinet was honoured with The Diana Certificate of Excellence Award 2011 for efforts ‘above and beyond’ to benefit others.
Their prize is an invitation to visit Althorp, Princess Diana’s childhood home.
Cabinet member for leisure services Councillor Linda Horton celebrated the award at with the young people at Coneygre Arts Centre.
The Diana Certificate of Excellence Award recognises outstanding contributions from young people aged 12-18 who work together in groups to improve their communities, organisation or schools.
Sandwell’s Shadow Youth Cabinet earned the award for commitment to representing the voice of young people at local, regional and national level.
The Shadow Youth Cabinet of 2008-2010 set a precedent, winning Sandwell’s first ever Princess Diana Certificate of Excellence Award.
Councillor Horton said: “We are very proud of the youth in Sandwell, in particular the Sandwell Shadow Youth Cabinet, in gaining this very prestigious Award.”
Maggie Turner, Chief Executive of the Diana Award, said: “The Diana Certificate of Excellence is for young people who make a positive change within their communities or schools.
“It identifies positive young role models that challenge negative stereotypes of young people, and encourages them to develop their full potential.”
