Police act swiftly after 43 arrests made during anti-Islam demonstration

GREATER Manchester Police have charged six men following an anti-Islam demonstration in Manchester.

Over 2,000 people took part in the demonstration organised by the English Defence League. Counter-protesters from Unite Against Fascism also turned up at the demonstration held in Piccadilly Gardens in the centre of Manchester.

While police said the incident passed off “relatively peacefully”, 43 arrests were made.

Five men – Kevin Greaves, 30, James Crangle, 30, David Monks, 33, Lee Howarth, 24, and Karl Steinegger, 20, – were charged with breach of the peace.

Another man, Michael Collins, 27, was charged with possession of cannabis and bailed to appear at Manchester City Magistrates’ Court on 16 October.

Eleven protesters were given fixed penalty notices for public order offences, 23, including one woman, were bailed pending further inquiries, one received a reprimand and three were cautioned.
