Three Presidents from the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce are extending an invitation to the local business sector to participate in a unique cultural experience by fasting for one day on Thursday, 21 March, to honour Ramadan traditions.

Omar Rashid, the president of the Asian Business Chamber, Naeem Arif, president of the Royal Sutton Coldfield Chamber, and Kasim Choudhry, head of Future Faces, will host an iftar gathering – the meal that concludes the day’s fast – at the GBCC’s headquarters at 54 Hagley Road.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a period marked by fasting, prayer, reflection, and communal activities for Muslims around the globe.

All able-bodied adult Muslims are expected to fast from dawn until sunset, with exceptions made for those who are ill, traveling, elderly, breastfeeding, diabetic, or menstruating.

The meal consumed before dawn is called suhur, while iftar is the evening meal that ends the fast.

The invitation to fast is extended to the entire business community, regardless of religious belief, on 21 March.

Participants are welcome to break their fast alongside their colleagues at the Chamber’s iftar event, which will take place between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm.

This event aims to foster diversity and unity among community members of varying ages, backgrounds, and religions.

Kasim Choudhry expressed how fasting offers a meaningful insight for those unfamiliar with the practice, often surprising individuals with the discipline required to abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset.

Omar Rashid emphasised the broader significance of fasting, which extends beyond food and drink to include a commitment to self-improvement and restraint in behaviour.

Naeem Arif highlighted the communal spirit of Ramadan, underscoring the value of gathering with family and community for meals and bonding.

Additional details and registration information for the fast-for-a-day initiative can be found online.
