Victoria Park Productions proudly presents a series of screenings celebrating Asian Comedy including screenings of The Big Sick, Four Lions and Comedy Classic Bhaji on the Beach with special Q & A’s taking place across the midlands at the Midland Arts Centre, The Mockingbird Cinema and Electric Cinema. 

The season celebrates Asian comedy on screen. Challenging perceptions and highlighting great Asian comedy talent. Each of the titles have been curated to represent the unique diversity of Asian comedy. From the hilarious all female, all Asian led classic comedy Bhaji on the Beach written by Meera Syal to the American comedy hit The Big Sick which tells the tale of a Pakistani immigrant making his way in the modern America the while navigating a romance with an all American girl from a very different background. The British comedy Four Lions ofcourse represents great home grown comedy talent and proves why Riz Ahmed was to make it in Hollywood.

The screening events are a chance to laugh, celebrate and highlighting the great talents behind Asian Comedy on screen.

The film season is as follows:

9th November 2018, 7PM:

The Four Lions at the Mockingbird Cinema with a Q and A panel hosted Omar Sabir. Omar (Unity FM) will be discussing the impact of Four Lions on Asian comedy. Highlighting the talent of Asian Comedians on Screen. A seminal classic, tackling strong themes of race, religion and terrorism in this excellent home grown comedy, showcasing the many on screen talents of Adeel Akhtar and Riz Ahmed (amongst others) with a special Q and A, discussing Asian Comedy and perceptions on film.

10th November 2018, 7PM:

Bhaji on the Beach at Birmingham MAC with a special Q and A with BBC Asian Network presenter Suzi Mann. Suzi will chairing a discussion about Female Asian Comedy on film. The focus will be to discuss and celebrate Asian Female Talent. This event will be a celebration of talent and the presence of

26 November 2018:

The Big Sick at the Electric Cinema, Birmingham hosted by Aatif Nawaz. Aatif will share his experiences as an Asian British Comedian. Complementing the film which follows an Asian immigrant trying to make it in the American Comedy scene. The Big Sick – the underseen comedy gem, from Kumail Nanjiani is classic take on an immigrant falling in love only to find the woman of his dreams battling a terminal disease whilst in an induced coma. The cultural exchanges and observation between Nanjiani, his family and his new loves family are both funny and bittersweet. An extremely relevant, funny and sweet comedy that certainly proves why Nanjiani is the on screen talent he is. The film is screened at beautiful Electric Cinema, Birmingham.
