Trains through a Black Country railway station were disrupted this weekend after a man died after being hit by a train.

There were no trains were stopping at Sandwell and Dudley station, in West Bromwich, on Saturday evening following the tragedy.

The man was struck by a train, shortly after 5.30pm, and social media users said several ambulances were seen at the scene.

The platforms at Sandwell and Dudley station had remained closed throughout Saturday night and Sunday morning, and were reopened at around 3.30pm Sunday.

A spokesman for British Transport Police established the man was pronounced dead at the scene and they were not treating his death as suspicious.

The man’s next of kin have been informed.

In a statement, British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Sandwell and Dudley Railway Station, West Bromwich, on Saturday, after a report that a man had been struck by a train.

“Officers from British Transport Police attended the incident, which was reported to us at 5.42pm.

“Sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner. Their next of kin have been informed.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Railway also confirmed that a person had died following the incident.

They tweeted: “I am sorry to advise that someone lost their life there yesterday, we are working to reopen the platforms as soon as possible.”

West Midlands Railway and Virgin services were disrupted for a number of hours.
