Sikh Union Coventry Celebrates Annual Event

The 19th annual Vaisakhi sports mela took place on Sunday 3 May 2015 hosted by Sikh Union Coventry.

The event was fist held in 1996 at a local temple and now takes place every year at War Memorial Park to celebrate the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi. It attracts people from all over the Midlands.

The rain poured down in true British Bank Holiday style but as the clouds disappeared and the sun started shining hundreds of competitors joined in the sports activities and enjoyed the afternoon.

Sports games from football, athletics and the Indian sport of Kabadi took place. The highlight of the event was the tug of war that had spectators gathered around towards the end of the day.

Many charities, community groups and stalls were present spreading the community spirit. Stalls sold various different products from cakes to clothing, books and Sikh memorabilia. Children and families enjoyed rides at the fair ground and queues were lining up from samosas, chickpeas, chips and beans and not to forget, everybody’s all-time favourite… the sweet jalebi!
