All-star Rugby match raises \u00a36,000 for Pakistan floods<\/h3>\n

KEIGHLEY\u2019S Cougar Park played host to a Rugby League match with a difference\u00a0last weekend\u00a0with almost \u00a36,000 generated to assist with the challenging and ongoing work in Pakistan\u2019s flood ravaged regions.<\/strong><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The Political Animals XIII, founded in recent times by present skipper, Leeds-based Greg Mulholland MP and made up of MPs and other politicos, took on the British Asian Rugby Association (BARA) Select XIII in a combative and engaging contest played under Rugby League\u2019s Masters Rules. <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The final result was never going to be that important but for the record the BARA players won by 5 tries to 2 in what were testing conditions.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The money raised by the game will go towards the Pakistan Recovery Fund, whose Patron is HRH Prince of Wales. Every penny will be diverted to rebuilding homes and communities in the now, little publicised, vast flooded disaster zone.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Greg Mulholland MP, who scored his side\u2019s two tries, said: \u201cPolitical Animals RLFC are delighted to have been able to assist with the fundraising efforts for such a vital and worthy cause and we applaud the efforts being made by BARA and other organisations to assist with the rebuilding of homes and infrastructure in Pakistan.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cRugby League is a sport that is helping to build tangible bridges between communities and games such as this demonstrate the camaraderie and political goodwill that exists in the sport,\u201d added Greg.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Gavin Peake-Jones, Managing Partner of Knighton White, a philanthropy advisory company who are working in partnership with the British Asian Trust to set up the Pakistan Recovery Fund, said: \u201cSince the terrible flooding that afflicted much of central Pakistan last year the plight of the people has slipped from the news agenda but the challenges they face are still very severe.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are aiming to raise \u00a32 million for the British Asian Trust and fundraising ventures such as this go a long way to helping us achieve our goal,\u201d added Gavin who played for the BARA side. <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Ikram Butt, skipper of the BARA Select and founder of the Association added: \u201cThis was a great occasion and we always look forward to facing the Politicians on the rugby field. It\u2019s been a pleasure to lock horns with Greg and his team again. Cougar Park was a fine setting and were the perfect hosts.<\/div>\n

\u201cIt was a tough and uncompromising battle at times but it was always played out in good spirit!<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason why we played has far more significance than the end result and we\u2019ve raised a handsome sum of money to assist with Pakistan\u2019s reconstruction activity over what is a truly massive area of land,\u201d added Ikram who also heads up the LRF (Leeds Rugby Foundation) Connecting Communities\u2019 social initiatives and activities programme across West Yorkshire.<\/div>\n
