{"id":9758,"date":"2009-09-24T11:46:54","date_gmt":"2009-09-24T11:46:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2009\/09\/24\/worlds-oldest-marathon-runner-flies-the-flag-for-newham\/"},"modified":"2009-09-24T11:46:54","modified_gmt":"2009-09-24T11:46:54","slug":"worlds-oldest-marathon-runner-flies-the-flag-for-newham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2009\/09\/24\/worlds-oldest-marathon-runner-flies-the-flag-for-newham\/","title":{"rendered":"World\u2019s oldest marathon runner flies the flag for Newham"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Fauja Singh backs borough for 2012 Games<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"232\" height=\"236\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/Image\/ArticleImages\/FaujasinghNewham_232x180.jpg\"\/>THE OLDEST marathon runner in the world will be flying the flag for Newham\u2019s involvement in the 2012 Games when he competes in his next challenge.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Fauja Singh, aged 98, will be running the Toronto Waterfront Marathon this weekend alongside fellow teammates from the Sikhs in the City running group, who have a combined age of 256 years.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He will be wearing a Newham 2012 t-shirt during the 26-mile race.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The long-distance runner is the current world-record holder as the fastest nonagenarian to complete a marathon and will don a Newham t-shirt when he participates in this weekend\u2019s event.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Sikhs in the City\u2019s members are renowned as much for their determination as for their longevity, and will be looking to coaches Harmander Singh and Nirmal Lotay for physical support and receive spiritual guidance in return.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Fauja has previously been an ambassador for the 2012 Games and claimed five new world records in 2005 as part of an event to demonstrate London\u2019s suitability as an Olympic City.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He was also a torchbearer during the Athens Olympics Games a year earlier.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Fauja\u2019s 38-year-old teammate Nirmal is Newham born and bred.
