{"id":9480,"date":"2007-08-28T12:43:22","date_gmt":"2007-08-28T12:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2007\/08\/28\/mido-racist-chants-will-spur-me-on\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T16:22:13","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T16:22:13","slug":"mido-racist-chants-will-spur-me-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2007\/08\/28\/mido-racist-chants-will-spur-me-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Mido: Racist chants will spur me on"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Egyptian striker targeted by opposition fans<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"456\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"180\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/08\/MidoAnti-Islamicabuse.jpg\"\/>MIDDLESBOROUGH striker Mido has insisted racist chants he suffered during Sunday\u2019s home match against Newcastle United will only spur him on.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The Egypt-born Muslim striker was forced to endure chants of \u2018Mido he\u2019s got a bomb you know\u2019 from a section of the away fans as the two teams battled a 2-2 draw at the Riverside. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The 24-year-old, who moved to Boro in a \u00a36.8m deal from Tottenham Hotspurs, scored his team\u2019s equaliser in the 28<sup>th<\/sup> minute and was booked by referee Mike Dean after placing his finger on his lips and gesturing to his abusers.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Mido said his caution for the action was \u201cridiculous\u201d but added such abuse will only spur him on to do better for his new team. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m used to it from opposition fans,\u201d said the 24-year-old.\u201cI heard it, it was very clear and I understood what it was they were saying.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He described his booking as \u201cridiculous\u201d, adding, \u201cI was frustrated when that happened because I don\u2019t think I deserved a booking. I just don\u2019t understand the reason. I was told it was for \u2018security reasons\u2019, but I don\u2019t see how that\u2019s possible.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI just don\u2019t see what I did which would affect the security of the fans \u2013 I just put my finger to my mouth to say \u2018quiet\u2019. But that\u2019s football I suppose and you just have to get on with it.\u201d <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cIt made me want to score more goals. I was delighted to have scored once and I wanted another.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Boro manager Gareth Southgate also criticised the yellow card handed down to his striker.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;I find it strange that 3,000 people can abuse one person and nothing is done. On the other hand, when the boot is on the other foot, it gets him into trouble. In terms of civil liberties I find that strange,&#8221; said Southgate. &#8220;We had to calm Mido down at the end of the first half.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The FA have confirmed they will be looking into the incident. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The unsavoury incident is not the first time Mido has been subjected to anti-Islamic abuse.
