Birmingham Rep to Premiere Stage Adaption <\/h3>\n

Mandeep Dhillon and Jalleh Alizadeh will take leading roles in the stage premiere of Meera Syal\u2019s much-loved novel, Anita And Me which opens atBirmingham Repertory Theatre on 9 October (press night Tuesday 13 October) before a run at Theatre Royal Stratford Eastfrom 29 October.\u00a0 <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Adapted for the stage by Tanika Gupta and directed by Birmingham Repertory Theatre\u2019s artistic director Roxana Silbert, Anita And Me is a warm and touching coming-of-age tale that follows Meena (Mandeep Dhillon), the rebellious teenage daughter of the only Punjabi family in the mining village of Tollington.\u00a0 When she becomes friends with the impossibly feisty Anita (Jalleh Alizadeh), she thinks she\u2019s found her soul mate but her world is turned upside down as she finds herself caught between her two cultures. <\/div>\n

Mandeep Dhillon is best know for her roles of Saz in the BBC3 series Some Girls<\/em> and Dacia in CBBC\u2019s hit series Wolf Blood<\/em>.\u00a0 She can be currently seen in one of BBC iPlayer\u2019s first Original Drama Shorts, My Jihad<\/em>.\u00a0 Mandeep has also appeared in popular shows such as The Thick of It<\/em>, Whitechapel <\/em>and Cardinal Burns<\/em> and on stage in Angle at the Bush<\/em> and Little Platoons<\/em> at the Bush Theatre.\u00a0 Local Birmingham actress Jalleh Alizadeh has appeared on screen in the ITV comedy drama Benidorm<\/em> and BBC dramas Doctors<\/em> and Hustle<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/div>\n

Playing Meena\u2019s parents, Daljit and Shyam, are Ayesha Dharker and Ameet Chana.\u00a0 Ayesha Dharker played Meena\u2019s mother in the film of Anita And Me. She is currently appearing in Othello<\/em> at the RSC and her many other theatre credits include the West End and Broadway musical Bombay Dreams,<\/em> The Ramayana<\/em> at Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Arabian Nights<\/em> at the RSC.\u00a0\u00a0 On television Ayesha has appeared in Coronation Street<\/em>, Indian Summers<\/em> and Doctor Who<\/em>.\u00a0 Her film credits include Star Wars: Attack of the Clones<\/em> and The Terroist.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/div>\n

Ameet Chana was a series regular in EastEnders<\/em> and is currently appearing in the BBC drama My Jihad<\/em>.\u00a0 On stage Ameet has appeared in Happy Birthday Sunita<\/em> at Watford Palace Theatre and The Djinns of Eidgah<\/em> at the Royal Court Theatre. His film credits include The Black Prince<\/em> and Unhallowed Ground<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/div>\n

The cast for Anita And Mealso includes: Amy Booth-Steel (Mrs Ormerod); Janice Connolly (Mrs Worrall); Joseph Drake (Sam); Kiren Jogi (Aunty Shaila); Megan McCormick (Tracey); Tarek Merchant (Ned); Chris Nayak (Uncle Amman) and Yasmin Wilde (Nanima).<\/div>\n
