{"id":8679,"date":"2009-05-29T14:51:12","date_gmt":"2009-05-29T14:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2009\/05\/29\/eastenders-gay-muslim-shocker\/"},"modified":"2009-05-29T14:51:12","modified_gmt":"2009-05-29T14:51:12","slug":"eastenders-gay-muslim-shocker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2009\/05\/29\/eastenders-gay-muslim-shocker\/","title":{"rendered":"Eastenders\u2019 Gay Muslim shocker"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>\u201cWe need to reflect multicultural Britain\u2019, say soap bosses<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"223\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"235\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/Image\/ArticleImages\/EastendersGay_232x180.jpg\"\/>BBC bosses will embark on their most explosive storyline for a Muslim Walford resident later this month when newcomer Syed Masood embarks on a gay love affair with neighbour Christian Clarke.<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The story will come as a shock to hardcore fans of the soap who have seen newcomer Syed reveal details of a girlfriend. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>But in scenes set to hit our screens later this month, he falls for openly gay neighbour Christian.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;I think EastEnders would be doing the programme a disservice if they didn&#8217;t give a voice to various communities,&#8221; actor Marc Elliot who plays Syed told the BBC Asian Network. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;I think that&#8217;s really important because I think London is a very ethnically diverse multicultural place, and EastEnders has a job to reflect that in the storylines it gives people and the characters they have on board.&#8221; <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Diederick Santer, the soaps executive producer said they had always tried to reflect multicultural Britain through its storylines. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a morale tale of right or wrong; it\u2019s very much a human interest story where a young man struggles with the conflict between his faith and his feelings\u201d, he said. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cTo all intents and purposes, Syed\u2019s a \u2018good\u2019 Muslim man; he doesn\u2019t drink, smoke or engage in sex before marriage.
