{"id":8170,"date":"2015-02-11T15:12:43","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T15:12:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/02\/11\/womens-national-helpline-launched\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T15:02:30","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T15:02:30","slug":"womens-national-helpline-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2015\/02\/11\/womens-national-helpline-launched\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s National Helpline Launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Helpline aimed at Muslim women and girls<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"3\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"middle\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/mwnuk-helpline-467x184.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><font><font size=\"2\"><span>The Muslim Women\u2019s Network UK (MWNUK) has established and will operate a new national helpline aimed at Muslim women and girls who are suffering from or at risk of abuse or facing problems.<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><font color=\"#000000\"><font size=\"2\">\u00a0<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><font><font size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"10\" border=\"1\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/mwnuk-helpline-250x200.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/>Culture often poses a barrier to seeking help because of dishonour, shame, stigma and being rejected by the community. Some women do not feel comfortable contacting local groups because they are often based in the communities in which they live and fear breaches of confidentiality. These women remain isolated and unsupported. The specialist faith and culturally sensitive helpline will therefore provide a safe space for women and girls to talk about their problems.<\/font><\/font><\/font><font color=\"#000000\">\u00a0<\/font> <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><font><font size=\"2\">Shaista Gohir MBE, Chair of MWNUK, said: \u201cMuslim women and girls will be able to contact the helpline about a range of issues such as sexual violence, forced marriage, domestic violence, female genital mutilation, discrimination, mental health, self harm, marriage, divorce and polygamy.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><font><font size=\"2\">More women and girls will get the help they need, make informed decisions about their lives and be more prepared when problems escalate. The helpline will be an important step towards seeing an increase in reporting of violence.\u201d<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><font><font size=\"2\"><span>Faeeza Vaid, Executive Director of MWNUK, who will be presenting at the event said: \u201cThe launch of the helpline is timely because objectification of women is not the only problem. The largely negative portrayal of Muslim women in the media as \u2018not integrated enough\u2019 is resulting in rising Islamophobia and discrimination against them and we are likely to see this reflected in the helpline calls.
