{"id":7449,"date":"2015-04-14T11:32:21","date_gmt":"2015-04-14T11:32:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/04\/14\/salon-owner-given-longer-sentence\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T14:23:45","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T14:23:45","slug":"salon-owner-given-longer-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2015\/04\/14\/salon-owner-given-longer-sentence\/","title":{"rendered":"Salon Owner Given Longer Sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>10 Extra Months for Lying in Court<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"3\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"middle\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Tina-Patel-452x643.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>A beauty salon owner jailed for conning suppliers out of stock worth \u00a31,000s and racking up huge rent arrears will spend an extra 10 months behind bars\u2026for trying to trick a judge into believing she\u2019d paid back her debtors.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>West Midlands Police\u2019s Economic Crime Unit found Tina Patel \u2212 who set up Creative Salons in May 2013 from premises in Walsall\u2019s Park Place \u2212 tricked beauty wholesalers by sending emails purporting to be from bank officials confirming transfer payments.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>On one occasion Patel forged a banker\u2019s draft \u2013 whitening out the original payee\u2019s details and inserting her own \u2013 before emailing a scan of the cheque to a Derbyshire-based firm to convince them to despatch her shipment.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>And she repeatedly wrote cheques from closed bank accounts to cover monthly payments on a residential property she rented in Boulevard Walk, Walsall, amassing arrears of \u00a37,500 before eventually being evicted. \u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Patel admitted five counts of fraud at Wolverhampton Crown Court last May and was jailed for three-and-a-half years. She pleaded for leniency by producing a receipt from her landlady showing the bulk of her tenancy bill had been settled \u2013 but the judge demanded her story be probed by police when the property owner denied knowledge of receiving a payment or signing a receipt.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Fraud police turned to a calligraphy expert to compare the landlady\u2019s handwriting against the receipt \u2013 and when they found significant differences Patel eventually admitted penning the receipt herself.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The 38-year-old, formerly of Waterfront Way in Walsall, admitted perjury and at the same court, she was jailed for an additional 10 months.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Investigating officer Detective Constable Launa Rowley from the Economic Crime Unit, said: \u201cPatel tried downplaying the scam throughout: she initially claimed the bounced cheques were innocent mistakes, not calculated attempts to steal large quantities of beauty products, and that she\u2019d settled her rent arrears.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cHowever, I was in court alongside Patel\u2019s landlady when her defence team produced the receipt\u2026she told me she\u2019d not written it and that her signature must have been forged.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cA handwriting expert concluded that the receipt was a fake and Patel begrudgingly admitted writing it herself.
