{"id":6958,"date":"2014-10-24T15:01:01","date_gmt":"2014-10-24T15:01:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/10\/24\/diwali-comes-to-leicester\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T13:58:14","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T13:58:14","slug":"diwali-comes-to-leicester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2014\/10\/24\/diwali-comes-to-leicester\/","title":{"rendered":"Diwali comes to Leicester"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Leicester enjoys jubilant Diwali celebrations for 2014<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" align=\"middle\" width=\"467\" vspace=\"10\" hspace=\"3\" height=\"184\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/Image\/Gallery\/Diwali-celebrations-leicester-467x184.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nPeople in their thousands attended Diwali celebrations at the Golden Mile, Leicester to celebrate the auspicious festival of light.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nBelgrave road, where the festivities took place, was closed to traffic for four hours during a party that featured live entertainment including classical Indian, Bollywood and Bhangra dancers.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe public could see beautiful Rangoli art on the ground, a folk art from India where intricate patterns are drawn onto the ground. A colourful fireworks display also took place to everyone\u2019s delight. But the icing on the cake in terms of spectacle was Golden Mile, another name for Belgrave Road, being illuminated from top to bottom with over 6,000 light bulbs.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe event was hosted by Leicester City Council and Leicester Hindu Festival Council. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nLalita Chapaneri of Western Park said, \u201cPeople are all together. There is a great atmosphere and food and is very friendly and the children can run about and enjoy themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nRebecca, of West End, Leicester added, \u201cIt\u2019s absolutely incredible and brings so many people of different cultures together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe entire evening was a delight for the senses with amazing sights, smells and sounds throughout. Children happily released fire crackers onto the ground whilst Dohl drummers could be seen and heard playing for lively crowds. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThankfully the weather was peaceful enough for celebrations to take place.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nEven police officers were seen to take part with the public, Deputy Chief Constable Simon Edens, who was sampling some of the food on offer said, \u201cIt is a really good atmosphere. It is a joyous, friendly and happy occasion. All praise goes to the organisers of an event of this size which is so well run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe event attracted an amazing 350,000 people this year making it the largest Diwali event outside of India.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nCity Councillor, Piara Singh Clair, chair of the Diwali working group, said, \u201cIt&#8217;s a great day for Leicester. People come from all over the East Midlands and England to enjoy the festival in Leicester.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\u201cIt goes from strength to strength and has grown bigger and better.
