{"id":6450,"date":"2014-01-31T10:50:39","date_gmt":"2014-01-31T10:50:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/01\/31\/jail-for-thug-who-led-family-newsagents-attack\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T13:47:33","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T13:47:33","slug":"jail-for-thug-who-led-family-newsagents-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2014\/01\/31\/jail-for-thug-who-led-family-newsagents-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Jail for thug who led family newsagents attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Bad Blood\u201d led a thug to spearhead a robbery attempt <\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"3\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"middle\" width=\"460\" height=\"225\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Yasser-Hussain-460x225.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Bad Blood\u201d led a thug to spearhead a robbery attempt on a family newsagents that saw a shop-keeper bludgeoned with a metal bar.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nYasser Hussain, from Chartist Road in Washwood Heath, was among a group of men who charged into Washwood Heath News on 29 December 2012 and demanded till takings.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>He threw a flurry of punches at a 25-year-old staff member before turning on the victim\u2019s 19-year-old cousin when he arrived to investigate the disturbance.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nBirmingham Crown Court heard that an associate of Hussain\u2019s \u2013 who police believe fled to Pakistan soon after the raid \u2013 brandished an iron bar during the melee and left the shop-keeper with a nasty cut after striking him across the head.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe 26-year-old tried playing down his role in the attack but\u00a0 was jailed for four-and-a-half years after being found guilty of attempted robbery and two counts of wounding at an earlier trial.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nWest Midlands Police Detective Inspector Ben West said the case highlighted \u2018joint enterprise\u2019 laws that can see offenders jailed for simply being with someone who commits an armed offence even if they aren\u2019t carrying a weapon themselves.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nHe said: \u201cHussain tried claiming he merely threw a couple of punches, made no demands for money and was not armed. However, he travelled to the shop knowing full well violence would be used in an attempt to take money and that makes party to the armed robbery attempt\u2026it\u2019s no defence to later say you played a lesser role.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\u201cThere was bad blood on the part of Hussain towards the family run business \u2013 he didn\u2019t pick the shop at random \u2013 and was seen on security cameras lashing out at the victims.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\u201cTackling business crime is a priority for West Midlands Police: shop keepers should be free to go about their daily business free from fear of attack and as this stern sentence illustrates the courts will come down hard on offenders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe jury earlier heard how the older victim recognised Hussain as a local \u201ctroublemaker\u201d \u2013 though he has no previous convictions for robbery \u2013 when he walked into the shop at around 4.40pm.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nOne accomplice shouted \u201cgive us your money\u201d before a fracas erupted involving up to 10 men as other members of the family-run business ran to help.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nThe attackers eventually fled empty handed and, four days later, Hussain was arrested from his home address.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nHe initially denied being there but was picked out during an ID procedure and, when shown CCTV footage, changed his story but only admitted to playing a peripheral role.
