{"id":6283,"date":"2013-12-23T16:27:04","date_gmt":"2013-12-23T16:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/12\/23\/benefit-cheat-caught-claiming-rent-on-own-house\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T13:42:32","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T13:42:32","slug":"benefit-cheat-caught-claiming-rent-on-own-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2013\/12\/23\/benefit-cheat-caught-claiming-rent-on-own-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Benefit cheat caught claiming rent on own house"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Fraudster claimed he wasn\u2019t related to his own mother<\/h3>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"3\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"middle\" width=\"460\" height=\"225\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Willesden-Magistrates-Court-460x225.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div\/>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>A man who cheated Harrow Council out of thousands of pounds in benefits by pretending he was a \u201cpaying guest\u201d in his own house, has been ordered to pay all the money back and carry out community work.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Hiren Patel, 32, of Graham Road, Wealdstone, spent nearly 4 years pretending he didn\u2019t know his own mother.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>To maintain the charade, he even provided a signed letter claiming the two weren\u2019t related.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>But all along Mr Patel was a joint mortgage holder on the 3-bedroom house \u2013 living there with both his parents, his brother and another guest.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The Council\u2019s fraud team launched an investigation after becoming suspicious that Mr Patel knew his landlord. Record searches not only revealed that Mr Patel was paying rent to his mother, but that the two jointly owned the residence.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>During the investigation, Mr Patel claimed that he was compelled to support his mother and his wife at different residences, as the two \u201cwere not getting on\u201d. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He admitted fraudulently claiming housing benefit when he appeared at Willesden Magistrates Court on December 17.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He was given a Community Order of 150 hours unpaid work. He was also ordered to repay \u00a35,353 compensation, pay \u00a31,000 towards prosecution costs, and a \u00a360 victim surcharge.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Cllr Susan Hall, Leader of Harrow Council, said:<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThis is a disgraceful example of a dishonest man deliberately stealing valuable resources from people who really need them.
