{"id":6049,"date":"2013-10-10T14:30:16","date_gmt":"2013-10-10T14:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/10\/10\/mp-refuses-to-give-up-on-last-brit-in-guantanamo-bay\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T13:33:45","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T13:33:45","slug":"mp-refuses-to-give-up-on-last-brit-in-guantanamo-bay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2013\/10\/10\/mp-refuses-to-give-up-on-last-brit-in-guantanamo-bay\/","title":{"rendered":"MP Refuses To Give Up On Last Brit In Guantanamo Bay"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Shaker Aamer&#8217;s case remains &#8216;High Priority&#8217; for the British Government<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"3\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"middle\" width=\"460\" height=\"225\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/ShakerAamer460x225.jpg\"\/><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong\/><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong\/><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>Shadow <\/strong><strong>Justice Secretary Sadiq Khan has received Foreign Office reassurances that Shaker Aamer\u2019s case remains a \u2018high priority for the British Government\u2019 and that the UK Government continues to make it clear to the US that they want him released and returned to the UK as a matter of urgency.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Following reports that the final remaining British detainee at Guantanamo Bay, Shaker Aamer, was being subjected to physical and mental abuse, including sexual abuse, Sadiq Khan MP called on Foreign Secretary William Hague MP, to raise the matter with the US Secretary of State, John Kerry.\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In response, the Government have now reassured Sadiq Khan that they will continue to raise Shaker\u2019s case with their US counterparts.\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Since becoming an MP, Sadiq has long campaigned on behalf of Shaker Aamer and his family for his safe return home to the UK and for the closure of Guantanamo Bay. Sadiq has lobbied both the Foreign Office and the Prime Minister on many occasions and attended demonstrations outside parliament. The case is also of great interest to many of his constituents, which include members of Mr Aamer\u2019s family.\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In April 2013, a petition calling for Shaker Aamer\u2019s safe return to the UK received more than 100,000 signatures.
