{"id":5867,"date":"2012-04-11T14:43:59","date_gmt":"2012-04-11T14:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/04\/11\/great-british-bhangra-design\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T13:29:38","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T13:29:38","slug":"great-british-bhangra-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2012\/04\/11\/great-british-bhangra-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Great British Bhangra Design!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Bhangra dancer transforms costume for Diamond Jubilee celebrations<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"232\" height=\"624\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/SohanCostume_232x571.jpg\"\/>AN Indian dance artist is making sure he looks the part when he takes part in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations!<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Sohan Kailey, head of Aashiyana Arts, has had his very own custom Bhangra dance costume designed in the Union Jack colours.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The Wolverhampton born artist who now lives in Solihull will perform at various Diamond Jubilee celebrations this summer. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>And he came up with a novel way of celebrating the Queen&#8217;s 60 year reign. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI wanted my very own Bhangra costume designed in the flag of Great Britain,&#8221; Sohan told The Asian Today. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;My hometown of Wolverhampton has given me Bhangra. This is a way of giving back, to the community, celebrating our diversity and getting involved in these events is very exciting and rewarding.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;This is a first for a Punjabi Bhangra costume to have been designed in this way.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The dancer decided to wear the custom made costume to dance classes he heads to gage public reaction. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>And he admits he was pleasantly surprised at the reaction. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;Its already turning heads wherever I perform!,&#8221; he says.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;It reminds me of that dress that Elizabeth Hurely wore designed by Italian designer Gianni Versace!\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Sohan didn&#8217;t have to travel far in search for the material for his costume &#8211; he managed to grab it from Birmingham&#8217;s iconic Bullring market!<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Sohan adds: &#8220;Usually the Bhangra costumes come from India, however this time I wanted something that was Made in England.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;Luckily I found this material at Birmingham Bullring market and snapped it up straight away.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The costume was designed by Mrs Shakuntla Pun who admitted she was intrigued when Sohan visited her with the Union Jack fabric. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cWhen he brought the material I thought, what is he up to now?,&#8221; she said.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;I found it very interesting and refreshing to be designing something new.
