{"id":5500,"date":"2011-09-15T17:23:24","date_gmt":"2011-09-15T17:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2011\/09\/15\/muslim-student-wins-terror-arrest-compensation\/"},"modified":"2011-09-15T17:23:24","modified_gmt":"2011-09-15T17:23:24","slug":"muslim-student-wins-terror-arrest-compensation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2011\/09\/15\/muslim-student-wins-terror-arrest-compensation\/","title":{"rendered":"Muslim Student wins terror arrest compensation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>\u2018My name has been cleared\u2019, says ex-Nottingham student Rizwaan Sabir<\/h3>\n<div><strong>A MUSLIM STUDENT who spent seven days in police custody after downloading an Al Qaeda training manual from a US Government website as part of research for his PHD has been awarded \u00a320,000 compensation.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Rizwaan Sabir, 26, was arrested under the Terrorism Act in 2008 when he downloaded the document \u2013 which is available to buy from leading booksellers &#8211; as part of his course at the University of Nottingham. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He was held in custody before being released without charge. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Nottinghamshire Police confirmed they had agreed to pay Mr Sabir \u00a320,000 in compensation. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Speaking to the BBC, Mr Sabir said: \u201cWe&#8217;ve got to put this document into context, one it was downloaded from an American government website and actually a fuller version can be obtained through the University of Nottingham&#8217;s own library and in fact it can even be purchased from the likes of WH Smith, Blackwells and Waterstones book shops,&#8221; Mr Sabir said.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;This is hardly the stuff of terrorists. It was quite frankly disproportionate and over zealous action.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;I can now proudly say that some form of vindication has been achieved and my name has been cleared.&#8221; <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>But despite paying out \u00a320,000 Nottinghamshire police said they stood by the arrest.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In a statement the force said: \u201cNottinghamshire Police can confirm that Mr Sabir&#8217;s civil case has been settled for \u00a320,000 in full and final settlement.
