{"id":5288,"date":"2011-06-10T17:31:45","date_gmt":"2011-06-10T17:31:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2011\/06\/10\/catwalk-crown-for-leicester-student\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T13:01:42","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T13:01:42","slug":"catwalk-crown-for-leicester-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2011\/06\/10\/catwalk-crown-for-leicester-student\/","title":{"rendered":"Catwalk crown for Leicester student"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Sarika Pancholi scoops national award for colourful collection<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"middle\" width=\"460\" height=\"250\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/SarikaPancholi_460x225.jpg\"\/><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong\/><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong\/><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div><strong>A LEICESTER student has scooped a prestigious fashion award \u2013 for a colourful catwalk collection of knitwear made from shoelaces!<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Sarika Pancholi, a final-year fashion design student at De Montfort University, was awarded the David Band Textiles Award at London\u2019s Graduate Fashion Week. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Her designs wowed fashion big wigs so much that not only did high street giant River Island offer the talented 22-year-old an internship as a knitwear assistant, but renowned fashion designer Zandra Rhodes described Sarika as \u2018one of the top five British designers to look out for this year\u2019.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>For her collection, Sarika took inspiration from her rich Indian culture and traditional British knitwear techniques, and also incorporated everyday items into the garments, such as shoelaces, straws, lolly-pop sticks and whistles.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Sarika, from Rushey Mead, Leicester, said: \u201cI am still feeling very overwhelmed by the whole experience of Graduate Fashion Week \u2013 it has been an amazing few days.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cIt\u2019s a privilege to win an award in honour of the late David Band, who has been an inspiration to so many artists and designers. It\u2019s a real reward for all the long hours spent on finalising my portfolio and catwalk collection.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Della Swain, fashion design course leader at DMU, paid tribute to Leicester\u2019s new fashion star. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cWe are very proud of Sarika and the uniqueness of her work, which meant she stood out as the best contender worthy of winning the David Band Textiles Award,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a real testament to the quality of the innovative collections we had on the catwalk this year.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Sarika\u2019s collection also recently won her The Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters Bursary of \u00a32000. The bursary meant Sarika was mentored and guided by someone from the company throughout her final major project.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>But she wasn\u2019t the only DMU fashion student to enjoy success at Graduate Fashion Week. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Ume Sacranie\u2019s rock-and-roll inspired collection incorporating hundreds of birds\u2019 feathers was among the final 10 shortlisted for the event\u2019s top accolade \u2013 the George Gold Award.
