{"id":4481,"date":"2010-02-10T15:05:49","date_gmt":"2010-02-10T15:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2010\/02\/10\/hindu-man-wins-funeral-pyre-battle\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T12:30:29","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T12:30:29","slug":"hindu-man-wins-funeral-pyre-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2010\/02\/10\/hindu-man-wins-funeral-pyre-battle\/","title":{"rendered":"Hindu man wins funeral pyre battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>\u2018Verdict has breathed new life into an old man&#8217;s dreams\u2019, says Davender Ghai<\/h3>\n<div><strong>AN elderly Hindu man who won the right to be cremated on a traditional funeral pyre following a decision by the Court of Appeal today described the verdict as having \u201cbreathed new life into an old man&#8217;s dreams\u201d.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Grandfather Davender Ghai feared his health would fail him following a four year long battle to allow open-air cremations in line with his religious beliefs. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The 71-year-oldwas refused a permit for an open-air cremation site in Northumberland, in 2006 by Newcastle City council.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He lost a challenge to the decision at the High Court in London last May but today the Appeal Court ruled Mr Ghai&#8217;s wishes could be accommodated within existing legislation.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Speaking after the verdict Mr Ghai said that while the case had left him \u201cvirtually penniless\u201d he was \u201coverjoyed\u201d at the decision. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI am overjoyed by the Court of Appeal&#8217;s verdict, which I consider a vindication of every struggle and sacrifice over the last four years,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI never doubted justice would be done but, in all honesty, I often feared that my health would fail me before the legal journey had ended.
