{"id":4268,"date":"2009-11-17T14:23:28","date_gmt":"2009-11-17T14:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2009\/11\/17\/city-sikhs-celebrate-birthday-of-founder\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T11:49:23","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T11:49:23","slug":"city-sikhs-celebrate-birthday-of-founder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2009\/11\/17\/city-sikhs-celebrate-birthday-of-founder\/","title":{"rendered":"City Sikh\u2019s celebrate birthday of founder"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Thousands join procession across Sandwell, West Bromwich, Oldbury and Smethwick<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"180\" height=\"280\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/NagarKirtan_180x232.jpg\"\/>REJOICING Sikh\u2019s celebrated on the streets of Sandwell this weekend to mark the 540<sup>th<\/sup> birthday of their founder, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Organisers estimated more than 25,000 Sikh\u2019s from Sandwell, West Bromwich, Oldbury and Smethwick joined in the festivities which are celebrated each year. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>A colourful procession \u2013 called a Nagar Kirtan \u2013 took the crowd to each of Sandwell\u2019s seven Gurdwara\u2019s who jointly organised the event. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The procession was led by a decorated float which held the Sikh Holy Scriptures, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji<strong>. <\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Crowds were also treated to confetti showers, fireworks, music and hymns and Gatka martial arts performers along the way. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Malkit Singh, Event Organiser and President of Guru Har Rai Gurdwara, said the event was a huge success. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI am delighted that the Nagar Kirtan was a huge success.\u00a0 The whole day went off without any problems and in line with our plans,\u201d he said. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI had been concerned about the bad weather we had been having over the last few days but even the weather was just right.\u00a0 We had many more people attending than we thought we would and everybody thoroughly enjoyed it.\u201d <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He added the celebration of the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji was an important date in the Sikh calendar and would have been celebrated across the world. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cGuru Nanak Dev Ji is the founder of the Sikh religion and his birth anniversary is a very important date in the Sikh calendar,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cSikhs have celebrated this anniversary all over the world and in Sandwell, all of the Sikh community came together to take part in these festivities.\u00a0 For Sikhs, this is a celebration of Guru Nanak Dev Ji\u2019s teachings as well as his birthday.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Plans are underway already for the event next year. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands join procession across Sandwell, West Bromwich, Oldbury and Smethwick REJOICING Sikh\u2019s celebrated on the streets of Sandwell this weekend to mark the 540th birthday of their founder, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. &#13; Organisers estimated more than 25,000 Sikh\u2019s from Sandwell, West Bromwich, Oldbury and Smethwick joined in the festivities which are celebrated each year.
