{"id":4105,"date":"2009-09-18T15:38:34","date_gmt":"2009-09-18T15:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2009\/09\/18\/23-years-for-heroin-import-duo\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T11:42:28","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T11:42:28","slug":"23-years-for-heroin-import-duo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2009\/09\/18\/23-years-for-heroin-import-duo\/","title":{"rendered":"23-years for heroin import duo"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Heroin was hidden in carpets, court told<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"235\" height=\"210\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/MahmoodKhan_232x180.jpg\"\/>TWO men who tried to import half a million pounds worth of heroin hidden in carpets into the country have today been jailed for a total of 23 years.<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Ansar Mahmood, 42, from Bradford, and 31-year-old Hamid Khan, from Burnley were sentenced at Bradford Crown Court today.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Mahmood was jailed 12 years while Khan was given an 11 year sentence. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The drugs haul was seized in April 2008 by officers at HM Revenue and Customs at Heathrow Airport. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>West Yorkshire Police were alerted after Customs officers found 10.5 kilos of heroin inside a containment of carpets which were destined for Bradford. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Mahmood was arrested by West Yorkshire Police&#8217;s Crime Division officers four days later when officers carried out a controlled delivery of the carpets.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Hamid was arrested three days later in Burnley.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Mahmood was found guilty following a trial and Khan pleaded guilty in July 2009.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Detective Inspector Pete Darbyshire said: \u201cWe welcome the sentences passed today and hope they send out a strong message that the importation of drugs into West Yorkshire will not be tolerated. <br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n&#8220;The methods of concealment used to import the Heroin were very sophisticated and involved a great deal of organisation, however, thanks to the vigilance of those who monitor what enters the country, the drugs were taken out of circulation and the conspirators plan was thwarted.\u201d <\/div>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heroin was hidden in carpets, court told TWO men who tried to import half a million pounds worth of heroin hidden in carpets into the country have today been jailed for a total of 23 years. &#13; Ansar Mahmood, 42, from Bradford, and 31-year-old Hamid Khan, from Burnley were sentenced at Bradford Crown Court today.
