{"id":3788,"date":"2009-04-09T17:39:24","date_gmt":"2009-04-09T17:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2009\/04\/09\/pakistan-police-official-welcomes-uks-fight-against-honour-crime\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T11:34:32","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T11:34:32","slug":"pakistan-police-official-welcomes-uks-fight-against-honour-crime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2009\/04\/09\/pakistan-police-official-welcomes-uks-fight-against-honour-crime\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan police official welcomes UK\u2019s fight against honour crime"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Senior Superintendent Gulfraz Khan \u201cimpressed\u201d with UK approach<\/h3>\n<div><strong>A PAKISTANI police official believes the UK is ahead of other countries in fighting honour-based crime.<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Senior Superintendent Gulfraz Khan said he was \u201cimpressed\u201d with the UK\u2019s approach in fighting honour crimes. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Superintendent Gulfraz Khan and Superintendent Ashfaq Anwar were invited to Britain by the by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>They visited West Yorkshire Police, West Midlands Police and Cleveland Police to see at first hand the UK police service\u2019s approach to tackling honour-based violence. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The UK is one of the countries taking the lead in the fight against honour-based violence. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In November 2008 the Association of Chief Police Officers launched the first police service strategy for honour-based violence across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, setting out a commitment to ensure the safety of victims and potential victims and bring perpetrators to justice.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Senior Superintendent Gulfraz Khan said: \u201cIt was good to see at first hand the excellent work that is being carried out by the police here \u2013 we need to work in partnership and target grass roots, rather than fire fighting.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI was impressed with what the British police and Government are doing in relation to honour-based violence and forced marriages \u2013 I don\u2019t believe that there is another country in the world doing as much for our community.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Steve Allen, Commander in the Metropolitan Police Service said the number of British men and women reporting forced marriages and honour-based crimes stood at around 500. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He admitted they were unsure \u201chow many commit suicide as an alternative or an escape.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThe police response to honour-based violence is focussed on saving life, protecting those at risk of harm and bringing perpetrators to account,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cWe are actively encouraging other countries to engage with us on how we can all unite in the fight against honour-based violence and a visit by officers from the Pakistani police force is a step to help us achieve this.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senior Superintendent Gulfraz Khan \u201cimpressed\u201d with UK approach A PAKISTANI police official believes the UK is ahead of other countries in fighting honour-based crime. &#13;
