{"id":3719,"date":"2009-03-04T15:20:39","date_gmt":"2009-03-04T15:20:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2009\/03\/04\/birmingham-consultant-offers-support-in-gaza\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T11:33:01","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T11:33:01","slug":"birmingham-consultant-offers-support-in-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2009\/03\/04\/birmingham-consultant-offers-support-in-gaza\/","title":{"rendered":"Birmingham consultant offers support in Gaza"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Dr Hussein Nagi describes horrors in Gaza<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"209\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"232\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/DrHusseinNagi_232x180.jpg\"\/>A CONSULTANT in Birmingham swapped the West Midlands for the Middle East when he travelled to Gaza to offer urgent medical assistance to medics treating those injured in the recent crisis.<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Dr Hussein Nagi, an anaesthetist at City Hospital, joined a team of 10 doctors and a nurse to work with aid organisations Human Appeal International and Palestinian International Medical Aid. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>They took equipment and shared their expertise by providing training and worked in operating theatres that would be considered unsafe in this country.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThe standard is much lower than here. In Britain it would be illegal to work without an anaesthetic technician in each theatre. Over there I found one anaesthetic technician per six theatres,\u201d explained Dr Nagi. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThere were two teams in theatre, which is unheard of over here, so I realised there was a need for an extra pair of hands.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThey are desperate for anaesthetists: in one day they had about 240 casualties in one hospital and the doctors were working flat out for 48 hours, even on the fifth day of the crisis.
