{"id":3595,"date":"2009-01-14T10:44:42","date_gmt":"2009-01-14T10:44:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2009\/01\/14\/south-asian-artists-to-preview-work-in-coventry\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T11:29:47","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T11:29:47","slug":"south-asian-artists-to-preview-work-in-coventry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2009\/01\/14\/south-asian-artists-to-preview-work-in-coventry\/","title":{"rendered":"South Asian artists to preview work in Coventry"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>\u2018Through Other Eyes\u2019 exhibition opens next week<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"234\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"232\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/SujithKS_232x180.jpg\"\/>A GROUND-breaking exhibition featuring emerging artists from South Asia will be launched at the new-look Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry next week.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Artists currently living in India and Pakistan will make their international debut at the venue in \u2018Through Other Eyes: Contemporary Art from South Asia\u2019 at The Herbert in Jordan Well in the city centre from January 23 to April 19.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Curator G\u00e9rard Mermoz spent three months travelling to the continent to find the drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, films and prints by recent graduates to bring their work to a British audience.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Speaking about the exhibition Mr Mermoz said: \u201cI was interested in looking at South Asian art before it gets entangled with the commercial sector.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI wanted it to be from a different perspective because all private galleries in India are commercially led so we have selected artists before they have left art college.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>One artist on show is Durgabai Vyam whose tribal art painting of The Bhopal Disaster reflects the story of the chemical incident which killed 1,000 people.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Mr Mermoz added: \u201cDurgabai lives in Bhopal and this is a truly outstanding piece of work which compares with the film and recent books based on accounts of survivors and witnesses.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Rosie Addenbrooke, senior exhibitions and events officer at The Herbert, said the exhibition would appeal to people interested in contemporary art as well as a general audience.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI think people will be inspired to see such a big exhibition of work coming from India and Pakistan because the work is very different from art produced by artists from other parts of the world,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>For more information about \u2018Through Other Eyes: Contemporary Art from South Asia\u2019 log onto <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theherbert.org\/\">www.theherbert.org<\/a> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018Through Other Eyes\u2019 exhibition opens next week A GROUND-breaking exhibition featuring emerging artists from South Asia will be launched at the new-look Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry next week. &#13;
