{"id":3576,"date":"2008-12-19T12:20:21","date_gmt":"2008-12-19T12:20:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2008\/12\/19\/bbc-asian-network-misled-listeners-rules-ofcom\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T11:29:28","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T11:29:28","slug":"bbc-asian-network-misled-listeners-rules-ofcom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2008\/12\/19\/bbc-asian-network-misled-listeners-rules-ofcom\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC Asian Network \u2018misled\u2019 listeners, rules Ofcom"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>Film Caf\u00e9 guikty of changing results of votes<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"292\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"180\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/KajolAsianNetwork_180x232.jpg\"\/>THE BBC Asian Network was slammed yesterday for its \u2018lack of regard\u2019 for the broadcasting code after it changed the results of a Bollywood Film Awards show voted by its listeners.<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Media watchdog Ofcom criticised the station in a report that saw the BBC fined \u00a395,000 for breaching broadcasting codes on a total of five programmes. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The BBC Asian Network was cited in the report for its programme Film Caf\u00e9 which was broadcast on 17 February 2007. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The show, which was taken off the air in June 2007 following programme changes, was found guilty of changing the results of two categories in a Bollywood Film Awards show which was voted for by listeners. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In the \u2018Best Supporting Actress\u2019 category, Hema Malini received the most votes, but Soha Ali Khan was announced on-air as the winner, the Ofcom report said.\u00a0In the \u2018Best Actress\u2019 category, Kajol Devgan received the most votes but Rani Mukherjee was announced on-air as the winner.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The programme, Ofcom said breached Rule 2.2 of the Broadcasting Code which states: \u201cFactual programmes or items or portrayals of factual matters must not materially mislead the audience\u201d.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In a response to the investigation The BBC said in the case of the \u2018Best Supporting Actress\u2019, the wrong winner was announced due to human error, claiming the interactive producer misread the figures.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In the case of the \u2018Best Actress\u2019, the BBC said the incorrect winner was announced because a planned interview with the actual winning actress fell through.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The BBC said the producers\u2019 decision to substitute winner Kajol Devgan for runner-up Rani Mukherjee \u201ccontravened the BBC\u2019s Editorial Guidelines\u201d.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In September 2007 the Asian Network broadcast an apology to its listeners admitting the mistakes were \u201cbad\u201d and apologising \u201cunreservedly for them\u201d.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The apology followed an internal investigation carried out by the Corporations own watchdog the BBC Trust. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In its judgment Ofcom said the station \u201cdeceived\u201d both those who voted and those who listened to the programme. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In a statement the broadcasting watchdog said: \u201cThe case demonstrates the production team\u2019s lack of regard for the Code when planning the programme.
