{"id":3495,"date":"2008-11-11T16:50:15","date_gmt":"2008-11-11T16:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2008\/11\/11\/mep-launches-sikh-group-in-european-parliament\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T11:23:19","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T11:23:19","slug":"mep-launches-sikh-group-in-european-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2008\/11\/11\/mep-launches-sikh-group-in-european-parliament\/","title":{"rendered":"MEP launches Sikh group in European Parliament\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3>But Sikh delegates denied entry over Kirpan<\/h3>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"269\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"180\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/LizLynne_180x232.jpg\"\/>A NUMBER of Sikh delegates who travelled to Brussels for the launch of the All-Party Sikh Interest Group were denied entry into the European Parliament for a third successive time because they were wearing Kirpan daggers.<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The group travelled to the city along with Euro MP Liz Lynne for the launch of the All-Party Sikh Interest Group in the European Parliament. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Ms Lynne, whose initiative it was to launch the new interest group, and who is now one of the Co- Chairs, said that they had hoped to hold their first meeting in one of the Parliaments main rooms, but that the Parliamentary Authorities had ruled the Kirpan dagger to be a security threat and denied the Sikh members entry. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>This is the third time that leading Sikhs have been denied entry to the Parliament because of the Kirpan. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Speaking today Liz Lynne, who is also a member of the European Parliament\u2019s Sub- Committee on Human Rights and has campaigned on a variety of Sikh issues, said that it was outrageous that the European Parliament was discriminating against the Sikh community in this way.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThis new Parliamentary group is intended to look in particular at how Sikhs are treated within Europe.\u00a0Unfortunately it would seem that we do not have to go very far to find examples of the discrimination that many Sikh\u2019s face everyday,\u201d she said. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cI am deeply disappointed that the European Parliamentary authorities refuse to recognise the right of Sikh people to wear the Kirpan.\u00a0The Kirpan is not a weapon, it is a religious symbol.\u00a0This is not a question of security but one of religious freedom.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cIn the UK the right to wear the Kirpan is enshrined in law.\u00a0This includes allowing Sikh\u2019s wearing the Kirpan to enter the Palace of Westminster.
