{"id":3331,"date":"2008-07-16T16:01:56","date_gmt":"2008-07-16T16:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2008\/07\/16\/calls-for-an-end-of-exploitation-of-hajj-pilgrims\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T11:10:05","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T11:10:05","slug":"calls-for-an-end-of-exploitation-of-hajj-pilgrims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2008\/07\/16\/calls-for-an-end-of-exploitation-of-hajj-pilgrims\/","title":{"rendered":"Calls for an end of exploitation of Hajj pilgrims"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\"><b>\u2018It\u2019s unacceptable\u2019, says Government minister<\/b><\/p>\n<div><strong>THE GOVERNMENT is today hosting a summit to tackle problems faced by British Muslims making the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Travel operators, community groups and consumer organisations will discuss with the Government how to protect people from rogue travel agents.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In recent years many pilgrims have been ripped off by a variety of scams.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Some victims have paid for five-star hotels but have been left with poor quality cramped rooms, while for others visa\u2019s and flight tickets have not arrived in time.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>In extreme cases the government said agents were \u201csimply disappearing\u201d taking pilgrims\u2019 money with them.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Consumer Minister Gareth Thomas said British citizens were being treated in an \u201cunacceptable\u201d manner. \u00a0<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cUnfortunately, for some pilgrims what should be the occasion of a lifetime is turning into a nightmare\u201d, he said. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cIt&#8217;s not acceptable and we want to put an end to it.
