{"id":3238,"date":"2008-05-09T17:28:24","date_gmt":"2008-05-09T17:28:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2008\/05\/09\/fury-as-sikhs-denied-entry-intoeuropean-parliament\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T11:07:11","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T11:07:11","slug":"fury-as-sikhs-denied-entry-intoeuropean-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2008\/05\/09\/fury-as-sikhs-denied-entry-intoeuropean-parliament\/","title":{"rendered":"Fury as Sikhs denied entry intoEuropean Parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\"><b>Euro-MP Liz Lynne brands decision \u201coutrageous\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"226\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"232\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/LizLynneSikhDef232x180.jpg\"\/>A EURO-MP has hit out at the European Parliament after a Sikh delegation from the West Midlands were refused entry because some were wearing a ceremonial dagger.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Liberal Democrat Euro-MP Liz Lynne called the decision \u201coutrageous\u201d saying other member of the Sikh Federation not wearing the ceremonial dagger, called a Kirpan, were also denied entry.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>It is the third time in a row that the Sikh group has been refused entry into the Parliament. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Following the decision the delegation protested outside the European Parliament and were joined by Ms Lynne. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>She said the European Parliament were \u201cunjustified\u201d in their treatment of the group. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThis decision is outrageous. In the UK the right to wear the kirpan is enshrined in law, as it should be across the EU\u201d, she said.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cSikhs have made an outstanding contribution to the wealth and diversity of society in the West Midlands and elsewhere across Europe, and to treat EU citizens in this way is totally unjustified.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Ms Lynne said she would be taking the issue further. <br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u201dI wrote last week to President P\u00f6ttering of the European Parliament hoping to ensure entrance for my constituents but to no avail.
