{"id":3176,"date":"2008-04-21T15:52:52","date_gmt":"2008-04-21T15:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2008\/04\/21\/thousands-gather-to-save-curry-industry\/"},"modified":"2016-01-07T10:54:11","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T10:54:11","slug":"thousands-gather-to-save-curry-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2008\/04\/21\/thousands-gather-to-save-curry-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands gather to \u2018save curry industry\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"216\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"232\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/EthnicCateringAllianceDemo232x180.jpg\"\/>THOUSANDS of people gathered in central London yesterday to protest over new immigration rules they believe will damage the future of the great British curry.<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Restaurant owners, workers and supporters waved placards and called for the government to change new immigration rules, which caterers have said damages chances of finding skilled chefs from the sub-continent. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The protest, organised by the Ethnic Catering Alliance, saw a mix of Chinese, Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani and Turkish communities take part. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Organisers say the new points-based system for non-EU immigrants has led to a shortage of kitchen staff. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Under the proposals, migrants are only allowed to work in the UK if they meet a specific criteria \u2013 one including the ability to speak proficient English.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>A spokesperson from the Ethnic Catering Alliance said: \u201cWe respect the government\u2019s new immigration policy, believing that it has been introduced in the national interest, but we are unable to understand why Government can not find an initiative that will furnish us with the opportunity to fill our kitchen vacancies with appropriate staff and save the curry industry.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The spokesperson continued: \u201cImposition of new immigration law since 29th February 2008 doused our hope for any special curry house scheme to recruit skilled curry staff from abroad.
