<\/a><\/p>\nMarried dad-of-two Tahir, from Coventry, told how he was flagged down by Enescu \u2013 but then became suspicious after being left alone with the woman.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe man asked me if I could take her to St Christian Road,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe lady got in the cab. When I go a little, the lady was upset. She was crying.<\/p>\n
\u201cI said \u2018What\u2019s up love? Why are you crying?\u2019 I stopped the taxi and said \u2018Just tell me what\u2019s happened\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe said \u2018I don\u2019t know here, I just came here four days before, come to here to do massage, but they tell me go to prostitution, to do sex, but I don\u2019t want to do it.<\/p>\n
\u201cCan you help me go back to my country? The man said I got to do prostitution sex but I don\u2019t want to do it.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cI said \u2018Ok, I\u2019ll call the police and they can help you. Don\u2019t worry, the police will sort, the police will help you\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen I dialled 999 and the police came and I told them everything. They spoke to her and she came out the cab and they took her to the police station.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen she came out the cab, I said \u2018Are you alright? Are you happy?\u2019 She said, \u2018Yes\u2019. The police said \u2018That\u2019s good mate, well done.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
The dad-of-two added: \u201cI knew what to do because when I passed my test to be a taxi driver we were told everything, to help the customer, and to ring the police if you\u2019re suspicious about something.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been a taxi driver since 2004 but nothing like this happened before.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I know somebody needs help, I will do. If somebody needs an ambulance I will call. I\u2019m going to help, I\u2019ll try my best to help.
\n\u201cI told my wife and sons. They are happy about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Detective Inspector Wes Martin, who led the investigation through West Midlands Police\u2019s Public Protection Unit, revealed how crucial the cabbie\u2019s involvement had been.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the taxi driver picked her up, Enescu said \u2018This is my phone number, phone me when she gets there,\u201d said the officer.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe then started driving, and she looked a bit stressed. He was aware she didn\u2019t have any kind of belongings with her and he was quite concerned.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe looked like there\u2019d been an argument so he asked her if she was OK. She said \u2018No\u2019 \u2013 no more than that really.\u201d<\/p>\n
But the cabbie called the police, who raced to the roadside.<\/p>\n
Experienced officers, including a Romanian-speaking cop, spoke to the woman, who eventually told them what had happened \u2013 and she was taken into protective custody.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe taxi driver is going to be referred for a commendation because what a fantastic member of the public he was to do what he did,\u201d said Det Insp Martin.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a family man, a local Asian taxi driver, and it was a very honourable thing he did.\u201d<\/p>\n
Coventry councillor Naeem Akhtar said: “The council provides training and information to licensed taxi drivers that if they see something suspicious and believe something is wrong then they must contact the relevant agency.<\/p>\n
“I’m happy one of our drivers was brave and had the intelligence to see what was wrong and made a call to police in what is obviously a high profile case that has resulted in somebody getting convicted.<\/p>\n
“It sends a message that this is a horrendous crime we won’t tolerate…this driver could have just ignored what he saw and the victim would have ended up in a brothel and God knows how long she would have been there. Mr Mehmood’s actions saved her.”<\/p>\n
West Midlands Police worked with the National Crime Agency and Romanian police on the investigation \u2013 and praised the bravery of the victim in giving evidence.<\/p>\n
