{"id":29775,"date":"2019-07-29T15:02:10","date_gmt":"2019-07-29T14:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=29775"},"modified":"2019-07-29T15:07:59","modified_gmt":"2019-07-29T14:07:59","slug":"mayor-to-host-intergenerational-cricket-cup-at-edgbaston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2019\/07\/29\/mayor-to-host-intergenerational-cricket-cup-at-edgbaston\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor to host intergenerational Cricket Cup at Edgbaston"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Andy Street has announced that he is to host an intergenerational Cricket Cup at Edgbaston later this year in the wake of England\u2019s thrilling World Cup triumph.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Mayor of the West Midlands, who is himself a big cricket fan, is keen to build on England\u2019s recent success and the start of the Ashes series by hosting this new tournament, which aims to unite the different communities of the region.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor\u2019s Cricket Cup, which will take place on Sunday September 8, is aimed at young people aged 13-16 and adults over the age of 60, with grandparents competing against grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor, who is the former CEO of John Lewis, said: \u201cAs well as being one of the greatest sporting spectacles many of us are likely to see in our lifetime, England\u2019s triumphant World Cup campaign taught us all one crucial lesson \u2013 that sport has the power to unite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom young to old, amateur to skilled, the nation was gripped by England\u2019s win, and we must take advantage of that \u2013 especially with the Ashes starting this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why I have launched the Mayor\u2019s Cricket Cup, which will help to bring both the older and younger generations together in what is sure to be a day to remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is hoped the cup, which could become an annual fixture, will also help to show off the West Midlands\u2019 rich cultural diversity, something that is on show with the England cricket team.<\/p>\n<p>Birmingham-born all-rounder Moeen Ali said: \u201cIf you can come together with a common purpose \u2013 in our case winning the World Cup \u2013 and you show courage, unity and respect (our team mantra) you can achieve anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tournament is being supported by Warwickshire County Cricket Club, with the club providing professional coaches and umpires on the day.<\/p>\n<p>Ravinder Masih, the Head of Community Engagement and Government Relations at Warwickshire Country Cricket Club, said: \u201cThis has already been a fantastic summer of cricket at Edgbaston with the stadium hosting five incredible Cricket World Cup games and welcoming stars and spectators from across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Edgbaston Foundation is delighted to work with the Mayor on The Mayor\u2019s Cricket Cup, an intergenerational community initiative that encourages young and old to get active and follow in the footsteps of their heroes by playing on the outfield at Edgbaston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Registration for places is now open, and 100 places in total will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the event and to apply, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/tracking.vuelio.co.uk\/tracking\/click?d=1PLttcBX4sDwBVuM81glQLR0wxbzJxM9_AUaOlDP6dcEizgmLv7i2U7YqdpzXbKz96W8CrBlE_bu5vCX1mWgdJ3DGDh7NyQ1eZWfdBPYSlJNHUtGR5Vi6G1XBbpEOS-u4yiYLw8d4FiCXcMdkU0eI501\">www.wmca.org.uk\/mayors-cricket-cup<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><b>\u00a0Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street with members of Harborne Cricket Club (credit: Ravi Masih, Warwickshire County Cricket Club) \u00a0<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Andy Street has announced that he is to host an intergenerational Cricket Cup at Edgbaston later this year in the wake of England\u2019s thrilling World Cup triumph.
