{"id":2961,"date":"2008-01-08T13:25:50","date_gmt":"2008-01-08T13:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2008\/01\/08\/inquest-begins-into-death-of-teenager\/"},"modified":"2016-01-06T17:28:06","modified_gmt":"2016-01-06T17:28:06","slug":"inquest-begins-into-death-of-teenager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2008\/01\/08\/inquest-begins-into-death-of-teenager\/","title":{"rendered":"Inquest begins into death of teenager"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"272\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"180\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/ShafileaAhmed180x232.jpg\"\/>THE FATHER of a 17-year-old found dead in Cumbria admitted he was surprised when she went missing from home, an inquest has heard.<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Shafilea Ahmed disappeared from her home in Warrington in September 2003. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Her badly decomposed body was found by workmen close to the flooded River Kent at Sedgwick, near Kendal, Cumbria, in February 2004. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Iftikhar Ahmed told an inquest at County Hall, Kendal, today that she was a &#8220;bright child&#8221; but &#8220;problems arose&#8221; when she began her sixth form studies. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>South Cumbria Coroner Ian Smith asked Mr Ahmed: &#8220;When she went missing, was that a surprise to you?&#8221; <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;Yes,&#8221; replied Mr Ahmed. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He added his daughter\u2019s ambition was to become a solicitor and he was proud of her achievements. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Shafilea was last seen at her family home in Warrington on September 11 2003, a few months after refusing an arranged marriage. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>During an earlier visit to Pakistan to meet a prospective husband, she had drunk bleach and spent five weeks in hospital. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Shafilea\u2019s parents Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed were originally arrested and questioned along with eight other family members in connection with their daughter\u2019s death. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Suspicion had fallen on the family after it emerged a missing person\u2019s call to police was actually made by Shafilea\u2019s college eight days after her disappearance. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>They were released without charge and have maintained their innocence. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Shafilea\u2019s \u00a0parents, who have offered a \u00a35,000 reward to catch their daughter&#8217;s killer, have accused Cheshire police of racial stereotyping. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The inquest is expected to hear from a number of family members, who have described Ahmed as a &#8220;westernised&#8221;
