{"id":28923,"date":"2019-04-15T17:22:13","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T16:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=28923"},"modified":"2019-04-15T17:28:54","modified_gmt":"2019-04-15T16:28:54","slug":"west-midlands-police-targeting-dangerous-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2019\/04\/15\/west-midlands-police-targeting-dangerous-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"West Midlands Police Targeting Dangerous Drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"background: white;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">West Midlands Police are targeting dangerous drivers who risk lives by using their mobile phone at the wheel. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">A two-week operation starting today (Monday 15 April) to tackle irresponsible motorists. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">Traffic officers will be monitoring motorists on routes across the region to stop anyone making calls, texting or watching videos illegally rather than concentrating on the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">The clampdown forms part of a two-week national campaign aimed at highlighting the potentially fatal consequences of being distracted while on the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">Officers are working alongside West Midlands Fire Service and council road safety officers from the region to highlight the dangers and educate motorists. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">Anyone caught faces six penalty points and \u00a3200 fine following tougher penalties which were introduced by the Government in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">Sgt Jon Butler, from WMP, said: \u201cLet\u2019s be clear, driving while distracted by using a mobile phone is completely irresponsible. Just losing concentration for a few seconds can have devastating consequences and result in lives being ruined forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">\u201cIt is unbelievable people even consider texting and watching footage on their phones while driving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">\u201cOur priority is to keep the roads safe and this campaign will aim to tackle those who flout the law and remind drivers it is totally unacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">Members of the public are encouraged to submit dash-cam footage illustrating such illegal behaviour via the online reporting portal at west-midlands.police.uk website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson added: \u201cWhile I was Transport Minister I introduced the ban on using mobile phones whilst driving in 2003.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">\u201cThose who continue to use their mobile phones whilst driving are a dangerous minority, but they put the lives of every road user at risk. Motorists who use their mobile phone while driving are four times more likely to crash. This campaign is about saving lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">\u201cDriving while using a mobile phone is one of the \u2018fatal four\u2019 offences which makes you more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a collision; alongside speeding, drink\/drug driving and not wearing a seatbelt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 14.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #37474f;\">\u201cIt absolutely horrifies me when I see drivers on their phones and sadly we see it all too often. &#8220;I am glad West Midlands Police are taking part in this national campaign.
