{"id":28920,"date":"2019-04-15T16:53:49","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T15:53:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=28920"},"modified":"2019-04-15T17:11:22","modified_gmt":"2019-04-15T16:11:22","slug":"daughter-finds-late-mums-memoir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2019\/04\/15\/daughter-finds-late-mums-memoir\/","title":{"rendered":"Daughter Finds Late Mum\u2019s Memoir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A Birmingham woman who has been named Brummie Mummies Heroes, knew she was dying from breast cancer, so decided to leave her children and husband an incredible gift &#8211; her memoir.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kumi Modi wrote about a remarkable love story about her undying love for her husband and kids.<\/p>\n<p>Kumi\u2019s daughter Priti Draper found her mum\u2019s journal after the funeral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe love between my mum and dad was amazing, they were best mates who loved and cried together,\u201d said Priti, from\u00a0Sheldon, who has a daughter Bailey, two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMum wrote a diary when she was having chemo, we found it after her funeral.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The memoir includes how Kumi fell in love with her &#8216;ray of sunshine&#8217; husband before training as a dentist.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Kumi died in October 2007 after a brave cancer battle and left behind a bereft family &#8211; and a diary full of her love for them all.<\/p>\n<p>Kumi wrote: \u201cDad looked after G\u2019ma and us all. He kept us happy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had houseboys and girls to look after us &#8211; and Dad took us out on hols.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I finished school, I went to National College (to study science). Wanted to be a doctor &#8211; no such luck &#8211; so I was in dentistry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hated smelly mouths and red teeth. Yet I did decide to have a go &#8211; which was the next best thing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dad was paying my fees and working hard for all eight of us. We loved our mom and dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kumi wrote: \u201cI stayed back to do my Masters and wrote letters to \u2018Sh\u2019 as I called Praful. My dad would hide my letters from \u2018Sh\u2019 and test me &#8211; I just wanted to go to him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I loved him too much and after 38 years of marriage, I still feel the same. I can\u2019t live without my Sh, I love him forever and ever.<\/p>\n<p>Kumi wrote: \u201cNice small wedding and we were v. happy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sh family seemed wonderful. We had never met &#8211; yet I felt I was one of them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We flew to Kampala (Africa) and there were Mercs everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sh family were well to do and lovely, lovely people. Sh mum and dad and brothers\/sister welcomed me and I have never looked back.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I forgot home (India) and started my life in Kampala. What happiness and love &#8211; I was never short of anything.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My Sh was the greatest and I loved him so much. Even today I love him more and more and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kumi met Praful in Bombay, India at a dental college.<\/p>\n<p>They later moved back to his homeland of Africa to set up a dental practice in Kampala, then a second practice where Kumi worked as a surgeon.<\/p>\n<p>Arriving penniless in England with their\u00a0parents\u00a0and siblings, they were met by Red Cross volunteers who gave them coats.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Kumi developed breast cancer and then Praful had two heart attacks and a\u00a0brain haemorrhage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt went on for seven years and it was horrible, I\u2019d have to choose whether to help my mum having chemo or sit with my dad in intensive care,\u201d said Priti, who was studying in Birmingham at the time and had to go between two hospitals to be with her parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad was in an induced coma and couldn\u2019t speak. He had to have burr hole surgery (a hole drilled into his head).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were told there was a 97 per cent chance Dad would be like a vegetable. So it was a shock when he woke up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMum ended up with a radiation induced sarcoma. It was so rare she was one in five million, but she was so brave and never used to cry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kumi was just 65 when she passed away.<\/p>\n<p>Praful learnt to walk and talk again.<\/p>\n<p>Priti has\u00a0endemetriosis\u00a0and thought she\u2019d never be able to have children.<\/p>\n<p>So she was thrilled when she discovered she was going to be a mum.<\/p>\n<p>But it was bittersweet as her mum was not there to guide her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI miss my mum and sometimes I feel overwhelmed without her,\u201d said Priti.<\/p>\n<p>Brummie Mummies Heroes is a series all about celebrating families of courage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Birmingham woman who has been named Brummie Mummies Heroes, knew she was dying from breast cancer, so decided to leave her children and husband an incredible gift &#8211; her memoir.
