{"id":2883,"date":"2007-11-07T16:20:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-07T16:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2007\/11\/07\/sikh-bracelet-row-pupil-to-fight-case\/"},"modified":"2016-01-06T17:25:00","modified_gmt":"2016-01-06T17:25:00","slug":"sikh-bracelet-row-pupil-to-fight-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2007\/11\/07\/sikh-bracelet-row-pupil-to-fight-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Sikh bracelet row pupil to fight case"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"272\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"180\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/11\/SarikaSingh180x232.jpg\"\/>THE FAMILY of a 14-year-old Sikh girl excluded from her school for wearing the religious Kara bracelet are to seek legal advice.<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Sarika Singh refused to remove the bracelet and was excluded from the Aberdare Girls School in South Wales as a result. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>While the school maintained they had a strict uniform policy in place which prevents pupils from wearing any kind of religious symbols, Sarika\u2019s mother Anita said they would seek legal advice. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>She said: &#8220;It&#8217;s not jewellery, it&#8217;s part of our faith and symbol of our belief. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;We feel very strongly that Sarika has a right to manifest her religion &#8211; she&#8217;s not asking for anything big and flashy, she&#8217;s not making a big fuss, she just wants a reminder of her religion.&#8221; <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>She added she had a meeting with the school earlier this week and challenged the decision but to no avail. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Sarika herself said the bracelet was important to her because it is &#8220;a constant reminder to do good&#8221;.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Jagtar Singh from the Sikh Federation UK, who are backing the youngster\u2019s case, accused the school of breaching the 1976 Race Relations Act. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He said: &#8220;The department for education and schools in England have said that if a head teacher or governing body were to deny a Sikh child one of their articles of faith such as the bangle then they would be breaking the law. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;If you are a practising Sikh, you have no choice, you have to have the Kara.
