The result is a distinctive and contemporary take on the much-loved style of food, with moreish dim sum and delicious seasonal sharing plates that encourage an interactive dining experience.

Guests will be greeted on the ground floor where the bar area and private dining room spaces represent the Yang element. This area introduces a new design to Tattu’s collection with light, masculine and fiery details. Reflective gold finishes and temple-like rock create a warm and engaging space perfect for enjoying a cocktail or two before or after dining.

Downstairs, the main restaurant reflects the elements of Yin with a dark, feminine and immersive space featuring oriental fretwork, imported precious rock and Tattu’s signature blossom trees.

Adam Jones, managing director and co-owner of Tattu, explains: “As we approached the design process for the restaurant, we knew the concept would need to fit with the character of the heritage space while also reflecting the contemporary look and feel of Tattu’s interior design and modern Chinese cuisine. As we explored the Chinese philosophy of Yin Yang – when two seemingly opposite forces can actually be complementary to each other – we knew this was a concept that would work perfectly within the unit.

“Working with the space, we decided to use properties of Yang on the ground floor to introduce a new design to Tattu’s collection that’s completely unique to Birmingham. The walls are constructed from travertine rock – a hard, masculine surface imported from Hong Kong. The tactile nature of the surface reflects the warm light, creating shadows within the space and contrasting the silk-like Calacatta marble that is used across the floor and bar.”

Diners can look forward to a selection of Tattu’s signature dishes such as Beef Fillet and Caramel Soy and the delicate Saffron Black Cod. New menu additions include Chilli and Sesame Roasted Scallops served with Chinese sausage, crushed edamame and mint, as well as an Asian Pear Crumble with green apple, almond and a pink custard.

Adam continues: “The main lower-ground dining space seats up to 130 guests who will overlook our first open kitchen which has been created to service our team of talented chefs, from the dim sum masters through to the wok chefs. The main dining area has been carefully sectioned by fretwork to create several different dining spaces, so we can ensure guests a unique experience each time they visit. We have incorporated more booth-style tables, as Chinese food is all about the concept of sharing and we want guests in Birmingham to embrace this when they visit. The response we’ve received from the public has been overwhelming, we feel at home in Birmingham already and look forward to opening our doors on 1st February.”

Tattu is located in The Grand development on Barwick Street.
