{"id":28060,"date":"2019-01-14T16:09:41","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T16:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=28060"},"modified":"2019-01-14T16:10:23","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T16:10:23","slug":"former-derby-council-leader-cheated-of-42000-by-preacher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2019\/01\/14\/former-derby-council-leader-cheated-of-42000-by-preacher\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Derby Council Leader Cheated of \u00a342,000 By Preacher"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A former leader of Derby City\nCouncil has been cheated of \u00a342,000 by a friend he entrusted with his finances\nwhile he was in jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.derbytelegraph.co.uk\/news\/all-about\/derby-crown-court\">Derby Crown Court<\/a>&nbsp;heard how Maurice Burgess\ngave Andrayas Khan full control of his bank accounts when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.derbytelegraph.co.uk\/news\/all-about\/crime\">he was jailed for five years in 2011<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burgess was released, almost\nhalfway through his sentence, to find bank loan letters he knew nothing about\nin his post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further investigation revealed tens of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.derbytelegraph.co.uk\/news\/all-about\/your-money\">thousands\nof pounds were missing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a victim impact statement, Mr Burgess, who led the council between\n2003 and 2005, said he felt \u201cshocked that a friend could do this\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrayas, a former preacher and teacher, has been spared an immediate prison\nterm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judge Shaun Smith QC said: \u201cYou are 63 years of age and of previous good\ncharacter not just in the eyes if the law but in the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour fall from grace is quite a big one because you undertook positive\nwork with inter-faith and community cohesion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut you took advantage of a friend that trusted you while he was\nserving the custodial element of a five-year sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou breached his trust and\nobtained \u00a342,000 from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis was not unsophisticated, you\nchanged details of bank accounts so you could extract money and when he was\nreleased from prison he found out loans he knew nothing about had been taken\nout under his name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI accept you did not use the cash\nto spend on luxury items such as holidays but instead used it to alleviate the\nfinancial difficulties you found yourself in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christopher Jeyes, prosecuting,\nsaid the offending began after Mr Burgess was handed a five-year-jail term in\n2011 for historical sex offences against an underage boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said Mr Burgess entrusted Khan,\nwho he had known for a number of years, with his finances while he served the\ncustodial part of his sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, over the next three years,\nKhan stole \u00a342,000 from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Jeyes said: \u201cMr Burgess had\nknown Mr Khan for a long time and believed him to be a respectable and\nresponsible man as he was a preacher in a nearby parish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe left him with blank cheques to\npay for legal fees but it was discovered that the defendant moved money around\nbetween accounts and took out loans in Mr Burgess\u2019 name without him knowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe offending came to light when\nMr Burgess was released early from his sentence in June 2014 and he found bank\nloan letters he knew nothing about in his post when he got home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe confronted the defendant about\nit and he admitted he had taken out loans saying it was to pay for improvements\nto a property he owned in Bradford.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Jeyes said Mr Burgess contacted\nthe police and an investigation began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a victim personal statement, Mr\nBurgess said: \u201cThings have been extremely stressful, I have been suffering from\ndepression and I have been going to counselling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving come out of prison I was\nshocked to find my friend had done this. I now find it difficult to trust\npeople.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khan, now of Kenmore Walk,\nBradford, pleaded guilty to a number of counts of fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khan was handed a two-year jail\nterm, suspended for two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was also ordered to carry out\n240 hours unpaid work and will be curfewed to his home address each night between\n7pm and 7am for the next six months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former leader of Derby City Council has been cheated of \u00a342,000 by a friend he entrusted with his finances while he was in jail.
