The Sikh\nCharity organisers of a Christmas Eve dinner for the homeless at Grand Central\nin Birmingham New Street have hailed an \u201cunbelievable\u201d night that left some of\nthe guests in tears at the act of kindness. Generosity from Sikh organisation\ngave out more than 20,000 meals over Christmas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Midlands Langar Seva Society gave\nout more than 20,000 meals to those in need over the festive period, reaching\nout on every day of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The free yuletide party in Birmingham\nNew Street Station on the busy lower concourse comprised of a three-course hot\nbanquet, carol singers, a DJ and Santa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Supported by Network Rail, the night had\na moving choral performance and brought people together at what can be a lonely\ntime of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Randhir Singh, chief executive of the\nsociety, said: \u201cThe feedback from our service users was unbelievable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt least half of the guests said it was\nthe best Christmas they have ever had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOne lady was in tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“She said she couldn’t remember the\nlast time she danced so one of our volunteers took her hand and took over to\nthe dancefloor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe couldn’t thank us enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe food, hospitality and the whole set\nup came together on the night and made a lot of people happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe had around 200 people turn up and without\nit they would have been stood outside in the cold, as would our volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt’s been the talk of Birmingham and\nspeaks so well of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have had the biggest response ever\non social media, with the most shares and the most comments we have ever\nhad.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The society, who are due to attend a\ndebrief with Network Rail early next week, want to turn the dinner into an\nannual event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe were out on Christmas Day and have\nbeen out every day since,\u201d Thandir said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOver Christmas we gave out more than 20,000\nmeals across the UK as well as presents in the week before Christmas, with\nschools and organisations giving donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We were able to give out two or\nthree presents at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt put a lot of big smiles on people’s faces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some of the volunteers that made the\ndinner possible – Caterers Spice Nation, the Black Country Community Gospel\nChoir and Paradigm Entertainment, with round tables decked out with Christmas\ncrackers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The society Midland Langar Seva, which\nwon a TSB Local Pride of Birmingham Award in April 2017, is a non-profit\norganisation that aims to help the homeless and provide food to those in need.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
