Developers eye derelict land near Aston and Birmingham City\nuniversities for an supplementary student project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New plans have been unwrapped to develop\n280 bedrooms on the site at the corner of Dartmouth Middleway and Heneage\nStreet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\nThe development would have a combination of 214 self-contained studios with the\nremainder of the rooms in shared flats with social spaces on the ground floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nwould also be 70 secure spaces for bike parking but nothing for cars if the\napplication is given the green light by city council planners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nproposed building, close to Aston University and Birmingham City universities\nand the National College for High Speed Rail, has been designed in a U shape of\nthree blocks reaching up to ten storeys at its highest point. It is expected to\ncreate ten full-time jobs once complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The application site, which is currently\nvacant, is in an industrial area of the city containing predominantly low-rise\nbusiness units dating from the 1950s and 60s built after extensive damage\nduring the Second World War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During\nthe Victorian period, it formed part of a larger area including the Caledonia\nTin Plate Works, Excelsior Wire Works and a number of smaller buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nproject has been designed by Digbeth-based D5 Architects on behalf of a private\nlandowner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A design statement accompanying the\napplication said: &#8220;Given the site&#8217;s location along Dartmouth Middleway and\nits proximity to a number of higher education institutions, the site presents\nan ideal opportunity to develop student accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The\nproposals seek to respond to the massing of the surrounding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We\nbelieve the proposals are appropriate for the site given its position and\nbelieve they will be a positive enhancement to the existing streetscape.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Almost 300 new students bedrooms are to be constructed on derelict land near Birmingham City.
