{"id":2683,"date":"2007-08-13T11:48:53","date_gmt":"2007-08-13T11:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2007\/08\/13\/man-charged-after-imam-attacked-at-london-mosque\/"},"modified":"2016-01-06T17:13:32","modified_gmt":"2016-01-06T17:13:32","slug":"man-charged-after-imam-attacked-at-london-mosque","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2007\/08\/13\/man-charged-after-imam-attacked-at-london-mosque\/","title":{"rendered":"Man charged after Imam attacked at London mosque"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"264\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"180\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/08\/RagbhirSinghMurder.jpg\"\/>A MAN has been charged by police after an Imam was seriously attacked at London\u2019s Regent\u2019s Park Mosque.<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The man, 40-year-old Ryan Donegan from Hammersmith, was detained and charged with GBH following the attack on Friday. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The 58-year-old imam, who has not been named, underwent surgery following what has been described as a \u2018brutal\u2019 attack. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Police were called to the Mosque, also known as the Islamic Cultural Centre, at 8.30am on Friday to reports that a man had been attacked on the premises. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The imam was rushed to a central London hospital where he underwent surgery. He had suffered heavy blood loss and had extensive damage to both eyes. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>While the police confirmed that the man had not been charged with a racially aggravated offence, Dr Ahmad Al-Dubayan, Director General of the mosque, had no doubts that the attack was religiously motivated. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>He told the Muslim News: \u201cThis was an Islamophobic attack\u201d. He said the man had entered the premises and had told the Imam he wished to convert to Islam before launching into the vicious assault. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The assault comes after an increase in attacks against Muslims and mosques since the recent failed car bombings in London and at Glasgow airport.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The Muslim Council of Britain blamed this assault and a similar attack at a Bradford Mosque last week on the media saying they have been \u201cplaying a key role in fomenting much of this Islamophobic prejudice and hatred against British Muslims\u201d.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>A spokesperson for the MCB said: \u201cIn recent weeks we have heard of several similar incidents of violent attacks against Imams and mosques across the UK, including a daytime arson attack on a mosque in Bradford last week where many children had gathered for prayers. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThere is clearly a growing anti-Muslim climate in this country and it has some very worrying implications for all of us.
