{"id":2680,"date":"2007-08-08T13:42:11","date_gmt":"2007-08-08T13:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tat.reddaisytrading.co.uk\/index.php\/2007\/08\/08\/police-report-channel-4-to-ofcom\/"},"modified":"2016-01-06T17:13:28","modified_gmt":"2016-01-06T17:13:28","slug":"police-report-channel-4-to-ofcom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2007\/08\/08\/police-report-channel-4-to-ofcom\/","title":{"rendered":"Police report Channel 4 to Ofcom"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<div><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"262\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"180\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/08\/UndercoverMosqueC4Dispatches.jpg\"\/>CHANNEL 4 has been reported to broadcasting regulator Ofcom over the way it edited speeches by Muslim clerics in an undercover programme on Islamic extremism in the UK.<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>The Dispatches programme \u2018Undercover Mosque\u2019, which was broadcast in January, took 10 months to complete and focussed on two Mosques in Birmingham \u2013 the Green Lane Mosque in Small Heath and the Jamia Mosque in Sparkbrook. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Visiting American cleric Abu Usamah was shown telling worshippers at the Green Lane mosque Jews and Christians were \u201cenemies\u201d of Islam and praising Osama Bin Laden. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>West Midlands Police had launched an investigation in the aftermath of the programme but today they revealed they would not be prosecuting any of the individuals in the undercover documentary. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>Instead they accused the broadcaster of \u201csplicing together of extracts from longer speeches\u201d which \u201ccompletely distorted\u201d what the speakers were saying. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>ACC Anil Patani for West Midlands Police said: \u201cAs a result of our initial findings, the investigation was then extended to include issues relating to the editing and portrayal of the documentary.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u201dThe priority for West Midlands Police has been to investigate the documentary and it\u2019s making with as much rigour as the extremism the programme sought to portray.\u201d<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nThe police investigation concentrated on three speakers and their comments in the programme. CPS reviewing lawyer Bethan David considered 56 hours of media footage of which only a small part was used in the programme. <\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>She accused programme makers of distorting speeches.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div>\u201cThe splicing together of extracts from longer speeches appears to have completely distorted what the speakers were saying\u201d, she said.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u201dThe CPS has demonstrated that it will not hesitate to prosecute those responsible for criminal incitement.
