{"id":25441,"date":"2018-01-23T13:48:47","date_gmt":"2018-01-23T13:48:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=25441"},"modified":"2018-01-23T13:49:19","modified_gmt":"2018-01-23T13:49:19","slug":"10-year-old-person-uk-rare-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2018\/01\/23\/10-year-old-person-uk-rare-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Year old is the only person in the UK with rare cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Young schoolgirl Laraib Mahmood is the only person in the UK with a rare type of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The 10-year-old has shared an insight into the reality of battling leukaemia in a touching video<\/p>\n<p>In February last year the youngster was diagnosed with the extremely rare Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) ABl2.<\/p>\n<p>Lairab has said \u201cI have spent more than nine months in hospital and it has been an extremely tough journey,\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-25443\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/birmingham-girl-only-person-in-UK-with-certain-cancer-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/birmingham-girl-only-person-in-UK-with-certain-cancer-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/birmingham-girl-only-person-in-UK-with-certain-cancer-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/birmingham-girl-only-person-in-UK-with-certain-cancer-265x198.jpg 265w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/birmingham-girl-only-person-in-UK-with-certain-cancer-560x420.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/birmingham-girl-only-person-in-UK-with-certain-cancer.jpg 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I would like you to join me for 24 hours of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inspiring video shows cheerful Lairab during her stay at Birmingham Children\u2019s Hospital, and back at home as she struggles to eat breakfast and then take her medication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaraib was a really healthy child,\u201d says her older sister, Mavish Khalid,.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was really active and always out and about so, as you can imagine, her diagnosis was a huge shock for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaraib had a fever for over a week, with severe headaches. Then she began getting really bad body aches,\u201d adds brother Hamzah Mahmood.<\/p>\n<p>The little girl, from Hodge Hill, was taken to see her GP after school and Within the hour she was in an ambulance, being rushed to Heartlands Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>It was then that her parents were told she had leukaemia, and the schoolgirl was transferred to Birmingham Children\u2019s Hospital for immediate treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBreakfast time is such a struggle for her because she\u2019s lost her appetite from chemotherapy,\u201d says sister Mavish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes even just the thought of food makes her vomit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lairab is always smiling and is passionate to share her journey as part of the charity Children with Cancer UK\u2019s campaign.<\/p>\n<p>At one point she even lost sight in one eye because her blood became too thick to travel into her blood vessels, but medics managed to save her sight.<\/p>\n<p>Cliff O\u2019Gorman, Chief Executive of Children with Cancer UK says: \u201cWith our 24 hours campaign, we want to demonstrate the reality that children with cancer have to deal with each and every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just the trauma and pain, but the incredible bravery and spirit shown by the children and families affected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re incredibly grateful to Laraib and her family for sharing their story. It highlights how far we have come with cancer treatment over the past 30 years since Children with Cancer UK was established, thanks to research and investment from charities like ours, but also how much more there is to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is crucial that we continue to invest in pioneering new kinder treatments like precision medicine that could improve survival rates in even the hardest-to-treat cancers and reduce the burden of toxicity for young cancer patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For her bravery and determination to help others, Lairab has been nominated for Pride of Birmingham Awards 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Young schoolgirl Laraib Mahmood is the only person in the UK with a rare type of cancer.
