{"id":25377,"date":"2018-01-18T12:09:17","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T12:09:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=25377"},"modified":"2018-01-18T12:09:17","modified_gmt":"2018-01-18T12:09:17","slug":"latest-whatsapp-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2018\/01\/18\/latest-whatsapp-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"The latest in WhatsApp Scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The fake messages on the WhatsApp for supermarket scams has appeared its head again and users are still being caught out, Action Fraud has warned.<\/p>\n<p>In November last year, the fraudsters sent a message with a link and the promise of a free \u00a3250 gift card for either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sainsburys.co.uk\/\">Sainsbury\u2019s<\/a> , M&amp;S, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesco.com\/\">Tesco<\/a> and Asda.<\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s Waitrose.<\/p>\n<p>These fake messages are designed to steal shoppers\u2019 personal information so if you do receive these messages delete it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Lynne Daniels a resident from Solihull said: \u201cI have had these for Tesco, Aldi and more and last week, friends from the dive club had the promise of big bucks from Waitrose to celebrate their 113th anniversary!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho celebrates 113 years?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have ignored them all because my son Simon said \u2018no one gives you something for nothing\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These fraudsters are not just using WhatsApp to target people but a new email to attempt to obtain usernames, passwords and any personal details<\/p>\n<p>The email scam is concerning Debenhams and will contain an exact copy of an email receipt from the retailer in order to get the recipient to click on links and give away personal details.<\/p>\n<p>Action Fraud said on its website: \u201cThis Debenhams e-receipt is the most convincing #phishing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/midlands-news\/sophisticated-netflix-scam-email-could-14157431\">email<\/a> we\u2019ve seen and could be lurking in your inbox. \u201cFraudsters have created an exact replica of a real e-receipt, but you\u2019ll notice they\u2019re sent from personal email addresses and not Debenhams. We\u2019ve had 55+ reports!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you do suspect you\u2019ve been sent the phishing email then don\u2019t click any links or open any attachments in the email, make sure you check that it\u2019s from an official source and not a personal email. And if you\u2019re particularly concerned you can ring up the company it was sent from to double check.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Action Fraud have given the following tips for staying safe from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/midlands-news\/how-whatsapp-supermarket-free-voucher-13874906\"><strong>WhatsApp<\/strong><\/a> scams:<\/p>\n<p>*Install security software on your device and keep it up to date.<\/p>\n<p>*Never click on unsolicited links in messages that you that receive, even if they appear to come from a trusted contact.<\/p>\n<p>*Follow WhatsApp\u2019s advice for staying safe whilst using the messaging service.<\/p>\n<p>*To report a fraud and cyber crime and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use its online fraud reporting tool.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The fake messages on the WhatsApp for supermarket scams has appeared its head again and users are still being caught out, Action Fraud has warned.
