{"id":24938,"date":"2017-11-21T12:07:01","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T12:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/?p=24938"},"modified":"2017-11-21T12:07:01","modified_gmt":"2017-11-21T12:07:01","slug":"budget-wishlist-calls-major-issues-addressed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/21\/budget-wishlist-calls-major-issues-addressed\/","title":{"rendered":"Budget \u2018wishlist\u2019 calls for major issues to be addressed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Business leaders in Greater Birmingham are urging Chancellor Phillip Hammond to address three key issues in this week\u2019s Budget: the economy, Brexit and investment.<\/p>\n<p>Strengthening the foundations of the domestic economy, securing the best possible Brexit deal and encouraging firms to invest in their own business are at the forefront of a \u2018wishlist\u2019 produced by Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) ahead of the Autumn Budget on Wednesday (22 November).<\/p>\n<p>In order to encourage firms to invest more in their businesses, GBCC says the Government must take a number of steps, including:<\/p>\n<p>*Ensuring that there are no new upfront taxes for the remainder of the Parliament;<\/p>\n<p>*Making sure plant and machinery are removed from the ratings system;<\/p>\n<p>*Removing the annual uprating of business rates for the next two years;<\/p>\n<p>*Removing the administrative burden caused by the new CCA system when it comes to appealing business rates<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-24884\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/paul-faulkner-2017_this-1-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"379\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/paul-faulkner-2017_this-1-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/paul-faulkner-2017_this-1-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/paul-faulkner-2017_this-1-696x526.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/paul-faulkner-2017_this-1-556x420.jpg 556w, https:\/\/www.theasiantoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/paul-faulkner-2017_this-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 379px) 100vw, 379px\" \/>GBCC chief executive Paul Faulkner\u00a0said: \u201cWhilst we welcome the news the Government is committed to investing in our region\u2019s transport networks, we shouldn\u2019t lose sight of the fact that more needs to be done to encourage local businesses to develop and grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn particular, it is vital the structures are in place to make it easier for our firms to invest in two vital pillars which are central to a company\u2019s prosperity \u2013 their people and their products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve just witnessed the first interest rate rise in ten years, so the last thing companies need now is to be hit with a hike in business rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chancellor needs to make it easier for firms to appeal rates whilst also implementing more radical measures, such as removing machinery from the rating mechanism, all of which will free up funds to be re-channelled into capex spend and training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn doing so, this will strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic economy and provide a welcome boost to productivity levels.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Business leaders in Greater Birmingham are urging Chancellor Phillip Hammond to address three key issues in this week\u2019s Budget: the economy, Brexit and investment.
